1:1 Technology
Westlake uses 1:1 technology in grades 1-12. Elementary students use school-provided Chromebooks that remain in the classroom. Students in 7–12th grade must provide their own Chromebook.
Students entering 6th grade are provided with a set of classroom Chromebooks to use at school. They will have homework assigned in Google Classroom, which requires the use of the Chrome browser on a personal Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer at home.
Order Through Westlake
Due to transitions in our technology department, Westlake is NOT offering a group Chromebook order for the 2025–26 school year.
Provide Your Own Chromebook
All 7th graders and any new students entering 8th–12th must provide their own Chromebook.
Westlake staff will install a Google license* and the school's management software on each Chromebook. This may be done at orientation in the summer.
There is not a specific Chromebook required, but parents may want to consider the following factors when selecting a Chromebook to purchase:
- A “Chromebook” is a device which operates on Chrome OS. A Windows laptop or MacBook is not acceptable for school use.
- Refurbished/renewed devices are not recommended. If a renewed device previously had a Google license installed, the school's management software might not work properly.
- Older Chromebook models may have an expiration date. This is usually noted in the specifications. Once a Chromebook expires, it will no longer auto-update.
- Consider durability and battery life when making a selection.
- Basic models (11.6 inch) are sufficient.
- A carrying case is recommended.
- Acer 311 and ASUS models are sturdy options that have proven reliable for school use.
* Westlake provides two Google licenses per student, which may be used at any time during 7–12th grade. Each time a student changes devices, a new Google license is required. If a student needs to enroll more than two Chromebooks over the course of junior high and high school, the family will be charged a fee for the additional Google license(s).
